Spring Car Maintenance

Spring is officially here, and the weather is slowly, but surely getting warmer.  Now is the time to get your car ready for the coming summer months!  Winter can be rough on your car, so it’s important to make sure that it’s ready to keep working during warmer seasons.  So, here are a few things you can do to keep your car road ready.

Wash and Wax Your Car

Winter weather can leave a lot of dirt, grime, and salt on your car.  Once winter weather is no longer a factor, wash it all off.  Leaving your car unwashed can leave the paint and finish affected, causing issues like rust.

Replace Wiper Blades

Snow and ice are not easy on windshield wipers.  Examine your wipers.  If they are tattered, cracked, replace them.  You don’t want them to fail you during the next rainstorm you drive through.

Check Your Battery

Cold temperatures can do a number on your battery.  Get it tested and replace it if necessary.

Check Your Tires

Your tires come into direct contact with the road.  Check your tire pressure to make sure your tires are properly inflated.  Check your treads for uneven wear, or cuts in the sidewall of your tires.  Replace if they are worn or damaged.

Check Your Fluids

Check the levels of your coolant, power steering, transmission, and washer fluids.  Fill as needed.  Also check and change your oil and filter.

Check Your Steering and Suspension

As we all know, potholes are a fact of life in the winter.  Hitting these obstacles can alter your cars steering and cause suspension problems.  Have your mechanic check your alignment and inspect your suspension system and make any necessary repairs.

Belts and Hoses

Belts and hoses don’t last forever.  They do dry out and need to be checked every season and be replaced as needed.

Examine your belts for any fraying, cracking or chipping in your belts, and look for any signs of leaks from your hose lines.

Flush and Refill Cooling System

Sometimes, systems need to be completely cleaned out and refilled.  Your cooling system can benefit from this servicing to keep its performance optimal.

Clean Lights

When our cars get dirty, so do our headlights and tail lights.  Over time they can become hazy and less able to provide the level of light you need.  To clean them all you need is baking soda, water and a soft toothbrush.

Replace Bulbs

Check all of your lights to make sure they are functional.  Replace any that are dim or burnt out.

Replace Filters

There are more filters on your car than just your oil filter.  Make sure you take the time to check them and replace them as needed (air filter, fuel filter, etc.).

Change Oil and Filter

Depending on the last time you performed maintenance on your car, you may be due for an oil change.  Check your mileage and see if you are due for one.

And last, but not least…

Follow Recommended Service Schedules

Read your owner’s manual and get any services that you may have missed.

And there you have it.  Now that you have an idea of what needs to be checked, get started on your spring car maintenance today!
